❯ OpenAI advances funding talks for up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation
A bridge before listingOpenAI moved closer to securing commitments this week. CNBC reported on October 22 that it was nearing a round of up to $30 billion, led by investors from the UAE and Coatue, at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation. It aimed to secure signatures by the end of October, with the final size still being determined. The financing has not been completed.
Revenue requires capacityOpenAI charges for ChatGPT subscriptions, enterprise services and model APIs. Delivering them requires upfront investment in research, chips and data centers. CNBC said the company had previously outlined a target of roughly $600 billion in compute spending through 2030. The round is positioned as a bridge before a potential IPO, for which no formal date has been announced. Its financing sequence continues to put long-term capital ahead of capacity expansion.
Investment and procurementOpenAI is separately negotiating a commercial agreement for UAE computing capacity. Equity investment and purchasing compute have different economics. A completed round would increase its financial resources before listing, while the investment case still depends on turning expensive capabilities into recurring revenue. Anthropic’s preparations to go public also place the companies in competition for the attention of large investors.
