❯ Qualcomm signs SpaceX deal to power a US terrestrial 5G network with Dragonwing

Technology for tens of thousands of sitesSpaceX selected Qualcomm’s Dragonwing cellular-infrastructure platforms to provide hardware and software for Starlink Mobile’s nationwide US terrestrial 5G network. In Yahoo Finance’s interview with Qualcomm, executives described a multiyear agreement, with deployment starting in 2027 across tens of thousands of cellular sites.

Ground coverage complements satellitesStarlink already operates a large satellite network. Ground stations add coverage and capacity for mobile services in dense areas and inside buildings. SpaceX also announced an agreement last month to purchase 800MHz spectrum licenses, with low-band signals helping indoor coverage. The terrestrial network will complement its satellite capabilities.

Demand follows constructionQualcomm executives expect deployment to accelerate after it begins and build toward nationwide coverage. For Qualcomm, the customer relationship extends beyond chips inside phones to carrier infrastructure. For SpaceX, building stations adds continuing needs for sites, network connections and operations, placing a full ground network at the center of its mobile-service expansion.
