❯ Anthropic expands drug research and acquires one-person biotech Mithril
From tools to research participationOn October 27, Anthropic described drug-development collaborations with six organizations and research programs of its own. Partners include Bristol Myers Squibb, BigHat Biosciences, Divergence Labs, Enveda, Generate Biomedicines and The Column Group, spanning molecule design, candidate optimization, manufacturing documentation and clinical planning.
One founder coordinates external laboratoriesAnthropic acquired Mithril Medicine, a one-person company developing treatments for two rare muscular dystrophies, for undisclosed terms. Founder Cody Tranbarger used Claude to manage contracts, logistics and experiments with 11 external laboratories, advancing one potential treatment from an idea to encouraging mouse results in under 18 months. The example shows software and outsourced experiments extending a small team’s reach; animal results do not establish human efficacy.
Benefits extend across developmentIn another collaboration, Enveda connected manufacturing documents to Claude. Anthropic reports that a test reduced human review from over 25 hours to under three and identified seven issues people had missed. Most disclosed work remains preclinical. Only if candidates continue to perform could an internal program begin human trials as early as late 2028.
