❯ Broadcom supports Anthropic’s $63 billion chip financing and takes on more risk

A vehicle buys and leases the equipmentBank of America, Blackstone, Citi and Morgan Stanley announced a $63 billion financing arrangement on October 26. A new special-purpose vehicle will buy Broadcom XPU accelerators and networking equipment and lease them to Anthropic, with deliveries expected from 2027. The arrangement finances access to equipment; it is not an equivalent equity investment into Anthropic.

Supplier support helped secure lendersThe Wall Street Journal reports that Broadcom CEO Hock Tan held late-stage bank negotiations and accepted higher loan rates and guarantees to secure participation. The official statement specifies residual-value support equivalent to the first-lien financing amount, giving Broadcom responsibility for part of the equipment’s future value. Blackstone is the sole provider of committed second-lien financing. These layers carry different risks, so the deal should not be described as an unconditional Broadcom guarantee of the entire $63 billion.

Product sales connect to credit exposureAnthropic gains equipment through leases, lenders supply upfront capital, and Broadcom’s support helps make the financing possible. That can facilitate chip sales while extending the supplier’s exposure beyond product delivery. Equipment residual values, lease payments and borrowing costs will jointly determine the economics.
