❯ Dropbox agrees to buy Tigris for about $350 million, using AI object storage to enter developer infrastructure
Signing precedes the announcementDropbox signed a definitive agreement on November 3 to acquire all Tigris equity for approximately $350 million in cash and announced it publicly on November 5. The price is subject to customary adjustments. Closing is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to conditions, so this is a signed acquisition whose business has not yet been incorporated into Dropbox.
Storage for models and agentsTigris provides globally distributed object storage for AI workloads, including training datasets, model files, images and video. Compatibility with Amazon S3 interfaces lets developers retain familiar software and access data across clouds. Its customers are developers and enterprises running applications and agents, a different market from Dropbox’s traditional individual and team file-sharing users.
Storage experience for new customersDropbox also unveiled DBX Agent Cloud, starting with object storage available as a standalone purchase. It plans to add filesystem and content-processing capabilities so agents can manage files persistently and convert documents, images, audio and video into usable inputs. Buying Tigris is intended to accelerate this infrastructure business, extending beyond a conversational feature for existing file storage.
A consistent home for contentDropbox wants its storage layer to work alongside customers’ existing clouds, compute services and developer platforms, keeping content consistently managed as model and compute choices evolve. That requires reliability, developer interfaces and a workable cross-cloud experience. A post-acquisition integration schedule has not been disclosed, and filesystem and content-processing features remain planned additions.
▮ SIGNALMore choice in models and compute makes continuity of content across platforms more valuable; Tigris gives Dropbox a way to compete for AI application data and developer spending alongside upgrades from its existing file customers.
