❯ Anthropic and Broadcom unveil a $63 billion equipment financing structure built around leasing

A financing structure for the compute partnershipBank of America, Blackstone, Citi and Morgan Stanley jointly announced a $63 billion transaction on October 26 to support AI compute using Broadcom technology for Anthropic. It funds equipment procurement under the previously announced strategic compute agreement, with deliveries expected to start in 2027. Capital enters the procurement vehicle, with Anthropic obtaining use of the equipment through leasing.

Separating equipment ownership from useAnthropic develops and sells Claude services and requires substantial computing capacity; Broadcom supplies XPU AI accelerators and networking equipment. A newly formed special-purpose vehicle, or SPV, will purchase that equipment and lease it to Anthropic. Anthropic gains use of the assets and assumes lease payments, while financial institutions fund procurement. Model operations, technology supply and financing occupy different roles in the arrangement.

Different repayment prioritiesThe announcement says Bank of America, Citi and Morgan Stanley are arranging first-lien financing, with Blackstone the sole provider of the committed second-lien portion. Those positions establish different repayment priorities if losses arise. Broadcom’s residual-value support to the SPV covers an amount equivalent to the first-lien portion. Support for that asset value and financing tier is not an unconditional guarantee of the entire transaction, all rent or every Anthropic obligation.

A different route for procurement capitalThe arrangement places substantial equipment purchases in a separate financing vehicle, with Anthropic absorbing the investment through future usage and lease payments. Broadcom connects equipment sales to institutional capital. Economic recovery still depends on delivery, lease performance and residual values. The structure answers who advances procurement funding without removing the need to align model demand, equipment obsolescence and long-term payments.
