❯ Physical Intelligence seeks at least $1 billion as it opens robot models to developers

Fresh talks at a higher proposed pricePhysical Intelligence is in early discussions to raise at least $1 billion at a valuation of roughly $20 billion, with existing backers Avenir and Lux Capital discussing a lead role. An Investing.com account of Bloomberg’s October 27 report places its previous valuation this year at $11.5 billion. The transaction has not closed, and both size and price could change.

A common intelligence layer for robotsFounded in 2024 by robotics researchers and academics, the company develops foundation models that connect visual inputs and language instructions to physical actions. Its central proposition is software that works across robotic arms, mobile manipulators and tasks. That could reduce the need for manufacturers to build a new control system whenever they introduce a different device or application.

Opening the models to outside usersThe Pi API beta introduced in October lets developers upload robot data, fine-tune models and connect cloud-hosted inference to their own machines. This creates a route toward serving manufacturers and robotics integrators. Bloomberg’s reported account also described the company as pre-revenue, so opening a beta should not be treated as evidence of an established paying customer business.

Capital behind the general-purpose approachRobot learning requires data from different machines, environments and tasks, as well as repeated physical testing. An external API can broaden usage and feedback, while transfer across devices still has to be demonstrated in deployment. Compared with Tesla’s integration of models and its own hardware, Physical Intelligence seeks to supply a common software layer to multiple robot makers. Its platform ambitions depend on the range of real tasks those models can perform.
