❯ Otter.ai closes $320 million in repayable financing to expand enterprise sales

Growth capital without equity dilutionReuters’ report carried by KSL said Otter.ai closed $320 million in growth financing from General Catalyst’s Customer Value Fund on October 20. Its CEO said the financing must be repaid with interest. It is not a new equity round and establishes no new equity valuation.

From individual use to team procurementOtter has expanded from meeting transcription into meeting knowledge and collaboration, allowing users to record, search and use meeting content. It reports more than 40 million users and says enterprise is its fastest-growing business, but disclosed neither enterprise revenue nor the paying-user share. Employees using an app organically do not automatically constitute corporate purchases; converting that use into team contracts is the opportunity.

Borrowing to acquire customersProceeds will increase sales and marketing spending, expand the sales team and support international growth. Repayment is tied to revenue generated by that spending, and management targets substantial enterprise growth next year. Shareholders avoid immediate dilution, while the business must recover enough cash from sales to cover principal and interest. This financing tests distribution economics around an existing product rather than funding only long-term model research.

▮ SIGNALOnce AI products have an established customer base, financing can be structured around acquisition payback rather than equity alone.
