❯ OpenAI announces a Pierre acquisition to bring code storage and review tools further into Codex

Announced, but not closedOpenAI announced on November 4 that it would acquire Pierre Computer Company, developer of Code Storage and a collection of open-source tools. Financial terms were not disclosed, and closing remains subject to customary conditions and regulatory approvals. The companies remain independent until then. The transaction centers on how developers handle and manage code.

An existing product relationshipPierre’s Trees and Diffs libraries already run in the Codex app, helping developers navigate project files and review changes. Code Storage lets applications store code and track its Git history through an interface; Git is widely used to record and coordinate changes in software teams. Pierre therefore spans developer interfaces and code-management infrastructure, and OpenAI already has experience using its products.

Agents add management workEarlier that week, on November 2, OpenAI described Pando, its internal source-control backend for scaling Git usage by engineers and agents. Parallel tasks create more branches, changes and review work, leaving records to organize after code is generated. Pierre’s tools make files and modifications visible to users, while its storage service provides a foundation for version management.

Integration with continued external serviceAfter closing, OpenAI plans to bring Code Storage features into Codex and continue maintaining Pierre’s open-source projects. Existing customers would still be able to use Code Storage; a detailed integration schedule has not been announced. Codex aims to cover more of the workflow from an agent creating a branch to code being deployed. The acquisition adds a team and tools for that ambition.

▮ SIGNALAs coding agents produce more code, review, version history and collaboration can become bottlenecks; buying Pierre expands the part of the complete development workflow that OpenAI can control through Codex.
