❯ Flapping Airplanes raises $1 billion Series A to pursue more efficient AI training
Another large early roundTechCrunch reported on October 21 that Flapping Airplanes announced a $1 billion Series A, co-led by Index Ventures and Lux Capital, at a reported $6 billion valuation. It follows a $180 million seed round roughly nine months earlier. Investors are financing a research approach that remains early in development.
Using less data and computeFounded by Aidan Smith, Asher Spector and Ben Spector, the lab aims to reduce the data required to train capable models and improve GPU utilization in training and inference. Its work includes frameworks that combine tasks in a single GPU program and overlap different types of computation. Lower training and operating costs are the intended outcome, rather than established commercial performance.
Funding time to investigateUnlike platforms already selling models at scale, the company did not provide revenue figures in the round’s coverage sufficient to establish a mature commercial business. The capital supports hiring and research toward demonstrable capabilities. Success could reduce the need for ever more data and chips. The valuation prices in that possibility, while the financing itself cannot resolve the technical uncertainty.
