❯ IBM revenue rises 5% to $17.1 billion and raises its full-year free-cash-flow outlook
Software and infrastructure leadIBM’s October 21 earnings release reported third-quarter revenue of $17.1 billion, up 5% as reported and 6% at constant currency. Net income was about $2.19 billion, approximately 26% higher. IBM now expects annual free cash flow to increase by more than $1 billion year over year.
Business lines grow at different ratesSoftware revenue was approximately $7.8 billion, up 8%, including 11% growth in Red Hat hybrid cloud and 19% in data. Infrastructure revenue rose 4% to about $3.7 billion. Consulting revenue of roughly $5.3 billion was flat as reported, showing software and computing purchases do not necessarily advance at the same pace as consulting projects.
Connecting AI to existing systemsIBM supplies software, hybrid cloud, infrastructure and consulting to integrate technology with existing data and business processes. It says customers are applying intelligent systems across more complete operating workflows while internal productivity initiatives improve returns. Such deployments involve data tools, operating environments and process changes, distributing demand across business lines.
Cash supports further investmentQuarterly free cash flow reached $3 billion, up $700 million, bringing the nine-month total to $7.8 billion. IBM retained its forecast for 4–5% annual constant-currency revenue growth. Stronger cash generation supports product investment and shareholder returns while reducing reliance on the timing of individual deals.
▮ SIGNALEnterprise AI opportunities extend across software, data and infrastructure, with dependable conversion of demand into cash remaining an important operating measure.
