❯ ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent order over 3 million Nvidia GPUs worth more than $35 billion at list prices

The orders reflect demand for inferenceReuters reported on October 20 that ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent ordered more than 3 million Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 GPUs, carrying a combined list value above $35 billion. People familiar with the matter said buyers intend to use the products primarily for inference, or running already-trained models.

Workstation hardware takes on AI workloadsThe RTX PRO 5500 is a workstation GPU for professional computers, with a different positioning from Nvidia’s highest-end processors for large data-center clusters. Deployers must match hardware to model size, response-time requirements and service volume. Expanding model services are bringing workstation-class products into large compute procurement programs.

Orders and delivery remain separateNvidia has told customers and partners that demand exceeds its planned production and that it cannot guarantee full fulfillment. The reported amount is a potential order value calculated at list prices, rather than recognized revenue. Final allocations and delivery schedules determine when procurement plans become usable service capacity.

▮ SIGNALInference is broadening the range of hardware being purchased, while supply determines how quickly those orders become additional model-serving capacity.
