❯ Retail data company Scanntech gets a $180 million Series F investment

Two co-leadsAccording to Latham & Watkins on October 13, Scanntech received a $180 million Series F led by L Catterton, with Partners Group joining as co-lead for its clients and Bradesco and SPX taking part. Scanntech is a Latin American retail data analytics and marketing services platform.

Born at the checkoutAccording to its website, Scanntech was founded in 1992 in retail checkout technology, launched the iPOS system in 2009, entered Argentina in 2010 and Brazil in 2013, is now headquartered in São Paulo, has offices in six countries and more than 500 employees.

700 million receipts a monthIts data comes straight from store checkouts: it says it reads 700 million receipts a month, more than 13 billion in total worth over R$1 trillion, and covered 79% of Brazil’s food retail channel in 2022. That closeness and coverage is what new investors value.

Data has to become a reorder listScanntech sells retailers, brands and distributors tools for pricing, promotions and sales analysis; its retail page lists inventory turnover, out-of-stocks and slow sellers. Retailers buy data to avoid running out or overstocking and to spend promotions well, and it only pays off when stores change orders and prices.

▮ SIGNALThe most valuable retail data isn’t charts but being close enough to the checkout to tell a store what to stock tomorrow.
