Licensed platformUniversal Music Group and audio AI company ElevenLabs are partnering on a platform that will let users create remixes, mashups and other derivative works from Universal’s catalog within licensed boundaries.

Copyright designThe Verge reported that generative music has repeatedly faced disputes over training data and infringement. Product quality is only one issue; songs, recordings, writers and artists all require authorization, labeling and payment. Universal is directing user creation into a controlled licensed catalog instead of leaving it outside formal permissions.

Platform testFor the music company, licensing scope and creator payouts will influence artist participation. For ElevenLabs, source identification and usage controls must be clear before launch and will determine whether the partnership can progress from a demonstration to distribution at scale.
