❯ Microsoft Plans to Expand Data Centers From 12 GW to 38 GW, With a Third Serving AI Chips
Capacity planAccording to Bloomberg, Microsoft plans to increase its global data center capacity from about 12 gigawatts today to more than 38 gigawatts by 2032, adding roughly 26 gigawatts. The target exceeds New York State’s peak electricity demand.
Supply gapPeople familiar with the plan said about a third of the target would support AI-specific chips. Microsoft has previously had to turn away AI and cloud business because of capacity shortages, making this a response to orders already being lost rather than a distant forecast. Land, power, equipment and grid connections still stand between a plan and an operating facility; locations and schedules have not all been disclosed.
Competitive scaleFor Azure customers, available compute capacity and deployment dates now affect purchasing as much as model quality. For Microsoft, tripling capacity pushes competition beyond chip procurement into power and construction. A delay at any link can leave demand with rival cloud platforms.
