Four teams become oneAccording to The Paper, citing people familiar with the matter, DeepSeek has merged its Harness team with its Web, App and Platform teams into a “Product Department” responsible for all products, design and development, led by Cui Tianyi. DeepSeek has not announced the change.

Where Harness came fromCui studied computer science at Zhejiang University, won six ACM Asia regional gold medals, spent nine years at quant firm Jane Street and joined DeepSeek in March 2026. A harness is the software framework built around a model to help agents carry out complex tasks. His team open-sourced the DeepSeek Harness v0.1 developer preview on August 13, passing 70,000 GitHub stars within 24 hours; the October 3 release added an experimental Claude Code Mods compatibility layer.

From model lab to product companyCui said DeepSeek’s goal is AGI and the Harness team wants to advance it from the harness side, building original products rather than copying existing agent tools. Putting web, app and the developer platform under one leader shows DeepSeek treating the experience around the model as its own line of competition.
